As the months passed, our ease and comfort with each other extended to running errands as well. A normal shopping trip always seemed to take twists and turns, becoming an adventure. Once, in order to save time, we split up and went to two different stores on the same strip. I finished before Marc, and when I met up with him, he showed me a large wallet which he found in the parking lot.

“Look at this. I checked it and it’s full of cash, credit cards, blank checks, insurance cards and a driver’s license.” Handing me the license he said, “Take this and call information. Get a phone number for the owner while I pay for our stuff.”

I did, but the wallet’s owner had an unlisted number. The operator explained that she wasn’t allowed to release it. “I guess we should just give it to the manager?” I suggested.

“No. How do we know that he won’t keep it? There is a lot of money in there. I know!” he exclaimed. She lives only about fifteen minutes away. Let’s head over. If she’s there, we will give it to her, and if not, we will leave her a note to call us.”

“I bet she must be freaking out now, wondering where her wallet is,” I told Marc as we drove.

“I know. Money’s one thing, but did you see how many credit cards she had in there? Calling the companies to cancel them alone will take her a week.”

“There is her house,” I said as I pointed to a mid-sized Tudor home on the tree lined street.

Marc saw I was holding the wallet. “Leave it in the car,” he directed. “I want to make sure that we are at the right house before we go and hand off her wallet to the wrong person.”

Marc knocked on the door and a man answered. Marc asked if the woman, whose name was on the license, lived there.

“Yeah she is my wife, what do you want?” he grunted.

“Can she come out? We found something that belongs to her,” Marc calmly replied. The man yelled for his wife and I retrieved the wallet from the car.

“Donna?” Marc questioned.

“Yeah,” she grunted. I couldn’t help but wonder if she and her husband met in charm school.

Handing her the wallet, Marc explained, “We were just at Trader Joe’s and we found this.”

“Oh. I was just there.” she said absently, as she took the wallet from his outreached hands. She turned around and walked into her house, slamming her front door.

Dumbfounded and resentful of her reaction, I turned to Marc and asked, “I guess it was too much to expect for her to say thank you? A little appreciation would have been nice, given that we went out of our way.”

“Don’t try and understand people. You never will. It doesn’t really matter if she appreciates what we did or not. We did what we thought was best. I don’t regret doing it. In fact, I’d do it again in a second.
